How the System Works
A signal booster comes with three different parts, all of which work together to boost your signal. These are:
- Outside antenna: This is designed to capture the weak signal in your area, and bring it inside.
- Amplifier: This boosts that signal, making it stronger and easier to use.
- Inside antenna: This broadcasts the boosted signal around your building, so you can use it much more easily.
Different Antennas for Different Uses
When buying a 4G signal booster, you’ll need to decide between two different types of outdoor antenna – omnidirectional or unidirectional.
The omnidirectional antenna is designed for those who want to boost multiple carriers in the area or residential customers who just want to get a decent signal. These pull in the signal from a 360-degree angle.
The unidirectional antenna, on the other hand, is for those who are in an area that has particularly poor signal, or just want to boost a single carrier. This pulls in signal from farther away.
Once that signal has been brought into your building, your amplifier will deal with it. Most cell signals are measured in decibels (dB). The signal is made up of radio waves that are measured on a certain spectrum.
If you have perfect signal in your area, you should have a reading of -50dB. If you have no signal at all, then it will read at -120dB. Your amplifier’s job is to bring the reading up as close to -50cB as possible.

Rebroadcasting the Signal
Once your signal has been boosted closer to -50dB, your indoor antenna will then broadcast it back out. Again, there are two different antennas you can use.
A panel antenna sits on the wall and broadcasts out a stronger signal the closer you get to it. These are perfect if you have weak signal in one room, so, you can install it in there and boost the signal.
A dome antenna is mounted on the ceiling, and broadcasts the signal more evenly. If you have trouble with signal all around your home, then you’ll prefer this model.
